A couple of months ago, before I created this star block for the Delightful Stars Quilt-Along, I decided to create a test block first, to make sure I had the math correct and to determine the best construction methods. This is Block #20 from Lesson 16.

I’ll admit, at first, I was a little intimidated by this block. Some days, I can just look at a block, break it down and get the correct math to complete it. Other days, not so much. Happily, it was one of my better math days, and once I figured out the cutting instructions, the block went together perfectly.

I was working on this just before Mother’s Day, so I decided to make two test blocks, and if they worked out, turn them into pillows for my Mom. I had picked up this gorgeous paisley print at a recent shopping trip and added some coordinating fabrics from my stash.

You helped me decide which colour combination to make. I love how my two pillows turned out:

My mom finally received her pillows a couple of weeks ago when I was visiting with family in the Toronto area. Here they are in my parents’ backyard.

I made mine to fit an 18″ pillow form. The centre star is 16″ finished. They could easily be made to fit a larger pillow by increasing the outer border. Milo photo bombed my photo shoot… he was trying to get up on the chair with the pillows.

I’ve created a pattern for you to make them too: Star Explosion Pillow. My pattern has been written for the confident beginner. Full details are available by clicking the image below:
