In the video below, Sarah Fielke is showing how she uses perle cotton for hand quilting.

Inspired by Sarah’s video, I’ve just about finished my first hand quilting project. It’s a gift for someone that follows my blog so I’ll have to wait until she gets it to show you the full mini quilt. For mine, I’m using Aurifil 12 wt. cotton thread. I’m not using a hoop as I found it annoying to have to keep repositioning it.

Last week, I broke down and went to the local quilt shop to get the Clover thimble that Sarah recommends. It’s fantastic! It makes a huge difference in my stitches and I can quilt for a lot longer now. A new package of needles ended up coming home with me too. Nice and sharp and a comfortable length to work with.

I’m planning to hand quilt the Aiming for Accuracy quilts and already have my Aurifil threads that work really well with the fabrics I’m using.

Have you done any hand quilting with thicker threads? I’m loving it!

I haven’t, but I’ve been wanting to. I’ll have to watch this video – thanks for the link!

This was good, but, I hand quilt quite differently. I use the ‘stab stitch, poke pull’ method. I don’t rock the needle. The method I use doesn’t cause any stress on my wrists, and I don’t need thimbles. I love that quilting can use so many different methods to create a quilt. None of the methods are wrong, if they work for someone, and produce a nice quilt. I did try pearl cotton once and didn’t like it. Maybe if I try the crewel needle she uses, I might like it better.

Thanks for sharing this video! I’m inspired to try hand quilting. I think it would add so much personality to my quilts!
