The poppies were painted with fabric paints and appliqued on the hand dyed background. The background is hand quilted which you cannot see in the photo. The flowers were flat, hence the pointillism on the blooms. As Canadians, we have much to remember!

My first QOV, a red and white ‘half Log Cabin’, made by me and quilted by Karine, a QOV long-arm volunteer in Ottawa, with an all over maple leaf pattern. It was donated to the QOV program and given to a returning veteran from Afghanistan, who was injured during his tour of duty.

I made this for my husband who served in the Navy for 6 years. I used his old t-shirts, sweatshirts, a turtleneck & the leg of a pair of sweatpants in the blocks. I used the work shirts he wore on board the ship for sashing, in the center, where I put his insignias & patches & the label on the back.

Mom was an officer in the Navy during WWII. 8 years ago, the Kansas City Star did a BOM on “Women of Grace & Charm” honoring 12 women WWII vets. She was the Oct. feature, and I made her quilt block adding her photos from Washington DC and the one they used. She’s 88 now & this hangs in her apt.
