How did you get into quilting?
I grew up watching my mom quilt. When I was 20 my brother and his wife were pregnant with their first child and I spent my summer making their daughter my first every quilt. You can see in the picture that it is very well loved. I will be spending some time next year attempting to patch the holes that my niece loved into it!
How/when/why did you transition from a quilter to a designer?
I started designing my own quilts in 2011. It was easier for me to get excited about a project when it was my own design. I also love puzzles, so designing something and then figuring out how to make it represents a fun challenge for me.
Which quilt is your favourite? Did you design it? Why is it your favourite?
I’m not sure I have a favorite quilt. Lately I love my Flying Arrows quilt, I designed it this summer. I wanted to create a pattern to be used with really large print fabrics, there is a free tutorial for it on my blog. I made it this summer and I just seem to be drawn to the colors in it lately.
How many UFOs do you currently have? More than I am willing to admit to myself even!
What size of quilt do you prefer to make/design? I prefer to design lap quilts. They go together quickly and I can quilt them easily on my home machine. They also come in handy when we lose power here, we always stay warm!
What colour do you use most often in your quilts? Probably blue
Favourite one-sentence tip for a new quilter: Don’t be afraid to try new things, even if they intimidate you.
Favourite size and brand of rotary cutter: Olfa, 45 mm
Favourite quote or mantra: My favorite quote is from my dad but it is not PG, so here it is toned down a bit “Forget them if they can’t take a joke!
Block Party #31 – Mirrored Diamonds
Here’s Melissa’s block, Mirrored Diamonds. An excellent block for using up scraps. When making this block, you get two for one as the design is mirrored. Head over to Melissa’s blog to download the tutorial.
