Pumpkin Topiary Mini Quilt

Today is my special day for the Something Wicked Comes this Way Halloween Paper Pieced blog hop hosted by Soma of Whims and Fancies. Thanks for inviting me to participate Soma. I’ve loved seeing all of the patterns that are available so far and those completed in the Flickr group.

My pattern is called Pumpkin Topiary and the paper piecing portion finishes at 10.5″. In my photo, I’ve already added a 1.5″ border and will add another 2 to 3″ outer border to make it into a wall hanging or doll quilt for my youngest niece who will be four this Halloween.

One note about my pattern, when I was stitching the pieces together, I kept messing up the unusual angles on the hat, and ended up stitching the angle and adding the side pieces after. I have drawn red lines on the pattern to indicate this extra seam, but have not numbered these sections. You decide if you want to sew those sections as one unit or in two pieces. I also added an angle line for the moon unit, but did not sew it as I got the angle to work the first time. I blame the cold meds!

I rate this pattern Beginner. While there are a lot of pieces, you have no specific joins or points that have to match up to form the design. I do suggest using the optional red lines if you’re just starting out.

Gather your supplies. I like to pre-cut my pieces where possible. You’ll see that I’ve done that with the black sky fabrics. I didn’t bother with the orange, just had a good variety of pieces available to cut up as I went.

Units stitched and trimmed. In hindsight, I should have trimmed the outer edges after I had the block sewn together, squaring the unit to 10.5″ at the very end.

My block sitting on top of the Halloween themed fabric I’ll use for the outer borders and binding. My friend Isabell in the UK sent this to me, it’s perfect for this little project.
