Earlier this Fall, the talented ladies over at the Fat Quarter Shop published their first book, Simply Fat Quarters. They sent me a copy to review and will be giving away two copies to my readers too. See below on how to enter.
The patterns in this book are suitable for both beginners and experienced quilters. There are 10 patterns in total, one of which has appliqué (see Spa photo below). If you can make half square triangles, these patterns are for you. Each pattern includes cutting, piecing and layout images for four sizes (crib to king size).
It is a pattern book and, as such, does not include general how to quilt instructions. However, the detailed graphics for each piecing step are extremely well done. Definitely some of the best I’ve seen. The cutting instructions are labelled with letters that are then used throughout the piecing instructions. Additionally, there are drawings showing you exactly how to cut your fat quarter to make the best use of your fabric.
Let’s look at some of the patterns, my favourite is Poppy:
A collage of various quilts in the book:
This is Marbles, an excellent pattern to use for an I Spy quilt:
Another favourite of mine, this is Retreat:
And Zap which I think would be perfect for large focussed fabrics:
Hats off to the entire Fat Quarter Shop team, you’ve done a fantastic job on this book, and I highly recommend it. Purchase it here: Simply Fat Quarters.
Give-Away
I have two copies to give-away. To enter, simply leave me a comment below telling me which pattern you want to make first from those I featured above. The winners will be chosen randomly, next Friday, December 7th.
Winners:
Congratulations to the two winners. Please check your inboxes for an email from me.
Oh wow, what a beautiful book! I think I would start wit the Poppy for one of my granddaughters.
Have a nice and blessed day and love from Holland.
I would do the Marbles pattern for my newest GD, born a few days ago. It would look great as a play on quilt for her. Looks like a book I would use often.
What a beautiful book, well done to the ladies at FQS, the Poppy quilt is just stunning, funnily that is what the grand children call their grand father
What a fabulous book! all the quilts are so beautiful. I would start with Poppy. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
The book looks fantastic! My favorite is Retreat, and that will be the first on my to-do list.
Agreeing with you that Poppy just POPS out of the book! But love them all, thanks for the chance to win!
I would like to do the pattern Poppy first very cute The patterns look like a good way to use up my fat quarter stash.
It’s hard to decide, they’re all fantastic! But I think Marbles would be my first quilt.
Have to choose between Poppy and Zap, hard decision. :) I think I´ll start with Zap!

A fat quarter is great for retail therapy. They cost less lunch yet provide so much more except on your hips!
I have so many fat quarters I have collected this would be a great way to use them up. My first pick would be Retreat.
Thanks!
I love the all, but I think I will make Retreat first.
I would love to do either Spa or Chevron. They remind me of a “modern” quilt and I am itching to try one of those. Thanks for the opportunity to win.
I love the simplicity of Spa ….. So this is the one for me…then I would look at the others I love
Thanks
Lorraine
Poppy! Definitely Poppy!
From those featured above I wish to make the Retreat pattern first…
I like the poppy quilt and the Zap one. Looks like a good book
What a great book. I `d begin with Poppy or Thristle. All are just wonderful. Thanks for the chance!1
I want to make them all. But I would start with the “Thistle”. Thank you for the chance to win.
I’d like to make Zap. Looks to be a great book!
I would make Marbles first. I have been collecting fabric for an I Spy quilt for my 7 month old granddaugher.
Spa is my favorite, although curves make me a little nervous. It’s a beautiful, simple quilt. Thanks
I love “Retreat”. The book looks great
My first choice would be marbles. it gives the opportunity to use leftovers from other quilts. I am looking for a pattern to make my son a quilt and this would be perfect! Thank you for the opportunity to win this great book.
I would love to win that book, Spa is my favorite.
What a beautiful book! The first quilt I would make would be “Spa”. So soothing!
I like Poppy. Just beautiful. Looks like a great book.
My favorite is Retreat — in tropical color batiks.
I would start with Poppy and Retreat!
I like Poppy the best but there are several others that speak to me. Let’s hope I’m lucky this time!
For me the first one I make has to be marbles. Looks like a great book loads I’d like to do.
For me the first one I make has to be marbles followed by zap. Looks like a great book I’d like to do them all!
What a great book. Spa — that quilt looks so comforting. After that it would have to be the energy of Zap! This is a book that has several quilts I would make. Thanks for letting us see it !
I like Retreat and Marbles. I like all of them Thanks sor the chance to see inside the book.
I love the thistle quilt and would really like to make that for my daughter. Last year was a year filled with changes for her and now we have a wonderful new grandson to share Christmas with. She needs a quilt to show her we all love her.
I think I would make the Poppy first although I do like the Thistle quilt also. I have just the fabric to make the Poppy and would do my best to try to make it “Pop”. Thanks for the chance, I just hope I am lucky.
I would like to make “Retreat.”
Where to start! I like the ‘Spa’ pattern as it is a change from straight lines and flows nicely. Thank you for the ‘in-sight’.
I like Spa.
Spa looks like the one.
Hmmm, let me see. They’re all gorgeous quilts, but I think that the first one I’d choose to make would be Poppy. Love the fabrics chosen for it in the book!
I like the ZAP.
I would love to make Poppy.
Zap!
The cover quilt has been catching my eye for the last few weeks but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Retreat. I am a sucker for squares! Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
Definitely Poppy. I love working with new shapes.
These patterns are awesome! I really like the Poppy, which is probably the one I’d choose to make first. But Retreat and Marbles are also on the list. Thanks so much for sharing!
I would definitely make poppy first! Love that!!!
I love Zap quilt, it´s absolutly different to my quilts.
I would make the brown, tan and Black open square Quilt 1st if I am the lucky winner of one of these books. Thank you, Bridget
