Earlier this Fall, the talented ladies over at the Fat Quarter Shop published their first book, Simply Fat Quarters. They sent me a copy to review and will be giving away two copies to my readers too. See below on how to enter.
The patterns in this book are suitable for both beginners and experienced quilters. There are 10 patterns in total, one of which has appliqué (see Spa photo below). If you can make half square triangles, these patterns are for you. Each pattern includes cutting, piecing and layout images for four sizes (crib to king size).
It is a pattern book and, as such, does not include general how to quilt instructions. However, the detailed graphics for each piecing step are extremely well done. Definitely some of the best I’ve seen. The cutting instructions are labelled with letters that are then used throughout the piecing instructions. Additionally, there are drawings showing you exactly how to cut your fat quarter to make the best use of your fabric.
Let’s look at some of the patterns, my favourite is Poppy:
A collage of various quilts in the book:
This is Marbles, an excellent pattern to use for an I Spy quilt:
Another favourite of mine, this is Retreat:
And Zap which I think would be perfect for large focussed fabrics:
Hats off to the entire Fat Quarter Shop team, you’ve done a fantastic job on this book, and I highly recommend it. Purchase it here: Simply Fat Quarters.
Give-Away
I have two copies to give-away. To enter, simply leave me a comment below telling me which pattern you want to make first from those I featured above. The winners will be chosen randomly, next Friday, December 7th.

Congratulations to the two winners. Please check your inboxes for an email from me.

Wonderful quilts in the book. I think I would start with Marbles. Retreat would be my second choice
I love Boulevard and Spa… Fabulous quilts in this book! Thanks for the chance to win…
I absolutely must make Spa! That is a beautiful quilt…and even though it says Spa, I thought of the beautiful Pacific Ocean which I live next to when I saw the picture!
All the patterns are clever but I think I would start with either Spa or Poppy. Looks like a beautiful book – thanks for the opportunity to win a copy!
Definitely a book I would like to own. I like the fresh modern style of the quilts. I like both Poppy and Zap. I’d probably make Zap first as it looks like it would work up fast. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book.
Retreats would be my first choice!
Thanks for a chance to get the book so I might be able to do that
It would be a toss-up between poppy and the quilt on the cover. I really like that one. Thanks for the great giveaway opportunity.
I think I’d make Zap first. I have a collection of cat prints that would be fun to use.
Lovely quilts. I would have to say Retreat is my favorite!
They are all lovely but Poppy is my favourite. Spa and the one from the cover share a second place. I would be very glad to have a copy. Thank you for the opportunity to win it. ^_^
I think I would like to try making Spa. I looks like a nice relaxing feeling quilt, for when you want to relax. I would love to have a copy of the book, I’m just starting to collect quilting books.
Oh I have to make marbles! I have been stashing fabrics to use for an I-spy quilt and that is a great pattern. Thanks for the giveaway.
I also love Poppy. It would be very fun to make.
I think that I would like to make first is thistle or heirloom. Both of these look real interesting. I would love to have one of these books. Thank you for this giveaway.
Poppy would be my first make.
Thanks for the chance to win!
Cheers
Linda
Poppy is my favorite pattern as well. Thank you for the chance to win!
Poppy would be my first to make.
I love these quilts!! The patterns and the colours I love Retreat! Thanks for the giveaway and the intro to this great book!
Retreat is my pick to make. It could be masculine or feminine depending on the colors used.
I’m glad to be able to see what’s in this great book ahead of time. They are all great patterns, but I was immediately drawn to the one called Spa. It was a terrific name for that quilt, because the softly curving look of it and the blues it was done in gave it a very calming look. And who couldn’t use that these days! Thanks for the chance to win this book!
It would be a toss up between the one on the front cover and Heirloom. thanks for the chance
Retreat caught my eye right away. I’d love to make that one first. But there are a few I really like.
My favourite is Poppy, but I also love the one on the cover of the book (not sure what it’s called).
Thanks for the chance to win :)
I would have to make Retreat first, then hmmm I will have to think about what would be next! Thanks!
I love the “retreat” pattern. I think I would like it in reds though. Something that would really pop! Thank you for offering this special treat of a free book to whomever might win.
I’d love to make Zap! Thanks for the chance to win!
I would def make Retreat first (all in purples and white on white, but they are all gorgeous!
Oh, definitely Retreat! It’s wonderful!
No doubt, Poppy… Love it!
I would love to make Spa for my daughter.
I like Poppy! To start with.
OMG I just love the quilt “Heirloom” from Simply Fat Quarters. This would look lovely on my newly married daughters bed
I liked the Poppy pattern and then the Zap pattern. Great give away! Thanks
I love Poppy too. Sure will make that one first
I really like the quilt on the cover and the Heirloom quilt.
Wow! Truffles would be my first. It looks and sounds yummy!
Thank You,
Pam
I would love to win a copy of this book! I love the quilt on the cover of the book, and would love to make it.
Looks like a wonderful book. I think Truffles is my fav, or maybe Poppy . . .
I would like to make Poppy. Thanks for the giveaway.
what a wonderful collection of FQ friendly quilts, they are all tempting
Thanks for the opportunity to have this wonderful book. Poppy catches my fancy and so that is what I would like to make first.
I’m with you and like poppy the best. I see it as a great stash buster!! Thanks for the opportunity.
Retreat is a stunning quilt but I think that the first one that I would like to make is Thistle which is unlike anything I have made before.
I like zap, wauw beatiful
Oh, I like Retreat! But I think Spa is beautiful too. Thanks for the chance to win this book – it looks like a good one!
I like them all. I love to shop for FQs. If I don’t win I will buy the book. Thanks for the chance to win. Zap will be my first quilt.
I like a lot of them but my grandson wants an I Spy so I think I would start there. I have been thinking about that for a post Christmas project. All the patterns look like fun. I love Poppy that would be next.
It’s not easy to pick one to make first, there are several quilts in that book I would love to make but I think I’ll go for the Retreat.
I like Truffles and Retreat, but the other patterns are lovely too. Very nice book.
