How/when/why did you transition from a quilter to a designer?

I fell in love with sewing when my mom taught me to sew a little poodle skirt for my Barbie at the age of four; I’ve tried many arts and crafts through the years, but nothing has been as enjoyable and relaxing as quilting. In 2004, as I stepped out of the dental office, I spotted a new quilt shop across the street, and since learning to quilt was at the top of my list of things to try, I ran in, no matter that I couldn’t really speak due to the anesthesia! Well, I signed up for my first class and have been hooked ever since. This is my beginner’s class quilt…

How/when/why did you transition from a quilter to a designer?

I’ve always enjoyed changing patterns to make them my own, and while working in a quilt shop back in 2006, I started creating custom quilt patterns for customers and classes, but it wasn’t until last year, after a blog hop, when a major quilting distributor contacted me about one of my designs, that I began publishing my patterns.

A few of my first designs:

Which quilt is your favourite? Did you design it? Why is it your favourite?

My favorite? Wow, that’s hard to choose! But this is “one” of my favorites.

I designed SoHo Garden as a Block-of-the-Month project for my guild. I made two, one as I drafted the designs, and this one to test the patterns. I used Kaffe Fassett fabrics and just love how the brown background makes them stand out.

How many UFOs do you currently have? Yikes, do I have to confess? I lost track a while back…

What size of quilt do you prefer to make/design? I don’t have a preference and will let the design dictate its size

What colour do you use most often in your quilts? I love vibrant color against a crisp white background, and over the past months have been working with orange, lots of orange!

Favourite one-sentence tip for a new quilter: The most important thing is that you enjoy your hobby… you chose to quilt for pleasure, so don’t let the quilt police stress you out… do your very best and love what you’re working on!

Favourite size and brand of rotary cutter: Love my Olfa 45mm with Clover’s blades.

Favourite quote or mantra: A quarter inch is your best friend!

what I like best about qui8lting is that you can loose yourself in it. All your problems can be forgotten and nothing matters for a little while.

I love your pattern great idea!!

I don’t know what I love about quilting …however I do love collecting fabrics… and the chemistry of color combinations …and starting new projects, I guess I love it all! Your block is so windy looking and screams glorious fall!
