How did you get into quilting?
I think it was just the next step, my entire family sews … I began sewing when I was about four. By the time I was in high school one of my older sisters started quilting and slowly infected the entire family. I started this quilt my senior year in high school but did not finish it before I left for college. My sister finished piecing it and my mom and other family members hand quilted it.
How/when/why did you transition from a quilter to a designer?
Boy, that is a very hard one for me to answer … I think the designer has always been in me. Some of my quilts were inspired by a pattern or design in a book or magazine but there’s always a twist.
Which quilt is your favourite? Did you design it? Why is it your favourite?
I think Got Dots will be my favorite for a long time. Yes, I know it’s not finished. But I smile every time I look at this top and the entire time I am working on it. It was inspired by an antique quilt I saw during an exhibition at the Bellevue Arts Museum but once again I added my own twist.
How many UFOs do you currently have? More than I can count or keep track of … last count was over 100 from small tiny things to king size but I actively work on about 20 at a time. Yes, I flit from project to project on a regular basis. Progress on one project fuels my imagination and desire to work on another so it’s a never-ending circle with me.
What colour do you use most often in your quilts? It used to be blue or periwinkle. Lately everything I do has orange in it!
Favourite one-sentence tip for a new quilter: Learn the basics well and then you can break any rule you want. And take classes from as many different teachers as you can … some will gel with your style, some will make you question yourself and their “rules” but you will learn something from every single quilter you meet.
Favourite size and brand of rotary cutter: I love the ordinary Olfa cutter because it allows me to cut left and right handed by just flipping it over. The 60mm in the shop and for cutting strips and larger pieces, a 30mm for trimming and cutting small pieces. When I work with silk I pink many seams so use my favorite 45mm Fiskars Cutter because I only pink with my right hand.
