An avid quilter, Kimberly began her shop as a side business while still working a corporate position, cutting, packing and shipping right out of her house during evenings and weekends. How did you get into quilting?
I have always been a crafter. I learned to crochet when I was 5 and I have cross stitched since I was 10. I always wanted to learn to quilt but didn’t learn until I was 26. My first quilt was hand stitched. The stitches are large and messy, but the quilt is so special to me!
How/when/why did you transition from a quilter to a designer?
I have been designing ever since I opened Fat Quarter Shop in 2003. The creativity that goes into owning a fabric store is contagious, and I wanted to write patterns for the fabric we were selling. I also wanted to produce a line of well written patterns with clear instructions. Thus, It’s Sew Emma was born!
Which quilt is your favourite? Did you design it? Why is it your favourite?
My favorite quilt is the quilt I made my daughter for her first bed. I used the Design Originals Garden Beauty book and altered the pattern by adding blocks.
How many UFOs do you currently have? I only have one unfinished project. I am halfway done making the Cabana Weekend 2012 Block of the Month.
What size of quilt do you prefer to make/design? (e.g. table runners, lap quilts, bed quilts, etc.) I love making crib and lap quilts!
What colour do you use most often in your quilts? I use all colors in my quilts. I prefer my quilts to be very matchy matchy so I always use the same collection within a quilt. I also never use black in my quilts.
Favourite one-sentence tip for a new quilter: To make an accurate quilt, set your seams before pressing and carefully cut and sew an accurate ¼” seam.
Favourite size and brand of rotary cutter: The Olfa 44mm is definitely my favorite!
Favourite quote or mantra: Be prepared, work hard, and hope for a little luck. Recognize that the harder you work and the better prepared you are, the more luck you might have. – Ed Bradley

I am trying to save the pattern for the Braced Star, but cannot do it. It seems to be in some special Google format. Haven’t had any trouble downloading the other patterns in the Glorious Autumn Block Party. Is there something I can do to get it to download and save?
