Delightful Stars Quilt-Along

For this week’s Delightful Stars Quilt-Along (DS QAL) lesson we are making Block #5. This block features half-square triangles, skinny flying geese and a square-in-a-square unit in the centre. It’s one of my favourite blocks so far. Here is my version:

Delightful Stars Block #5

To make the skinny flying geese units, I recommend using the Tri Recs Tool. This ruler set includes two acrylic templates, one for cutting the centre triangle and the second for cutting the two side pieces. It’s super easy to use and makes these units perfect every time.

No tool, no problem… If you don’t have the tool, I also include a paper pieced template with the block lesson, that can be used for completing the skinny flying geese units.

Bonus Tip:

The bonus tip for this week’s lesson has to do with joining the skinny flying geese and half-square triangle units together. While the angles of the two unit types are not the same, at the edge where you will stitch the 1/4″ seam allowance, the two angles do come together nicely. You’ll want to pinch the two pieces together and take a peek to get the seams lined up nicely and secure with a pin

Referring to my photo below, the units on the left show a good match, while the units on the right are not aligned correctly and will result in the skinny sky section being cut off when the block is sewn into the quilt top.

Joining Units

Next week is a break week, Lesson 12 will be available April 29th. Happy Easter!

Friendship Star Blocks

The Friendship Star Blocks started to arrive late last week. I am so excited about these!! Here are the first batch. Thank you to everyone that has sent me a block. I can’t wait to get them all and decide how to put them together. If I end up with enough, I’ll make the blocks into their own quilt!
