Appliqué Quilts

Based on a small quilt pattern by Mrs Moen. This was for my niece’s 14th birthday. She wanted a quilt about “fashion”. I saw and purchased a pattern, then greatly enlarged the dress and smoothed out the shape. I used 100 different pieces of fabric and machine appliqued each to a kona black square.

Four ‘tools’ were my inspiration:
Rotary Cutter (flowers)
Needle (stems of the flowers)
Scissors (leaves)
Stick Pins (rays coming from flowers). Using the shapes of these tools for the design elements I created a sweet little ‘Quilter’s Garden’ Wall Quilt.

From a kit by Mary Lou Hallenbeck, with specially designed fabric from the Car Collection by Maywood Studios. It is reverse machine applique. My first attempt at this technique.

Made for a dolls quilt swap but I fell in love with it and kept it! Pattern is from Peice of Cakes “Aunt Millie’s Garden” The swirly quilting really adds texture to the quilt. It now hangs at the end of the hall way in our house where I get to see it every day.

This quilt was inspired by some pictures of a balloon festival. I hand dyed the sky to get just the right shade of blue. The process of creating this quilt is on my blog.

Hurricane Irene devasted parts of my state of Vermont last summer.
One of the most heartfelt tragedy was this covered bridge standing strong since 1805 that was completely washed away. I made this quilt with a fusible appliqué technique shortly after its demise.

My family has been traveling to Chincoteague Island, VA for many years and it has become an integral family place that is very special to us. This quilt is to represent that. The animals and lettering are appliquéd.

Each flower on this quilt was made with fabric and trims from family and friends. The edges were turned on the flowers by backing them with interfacing. Centers and leaves were fused and all was hand embroidered and hand quilted. I made it for my sister-in-law.

A quilt designed by myself for a friend’s granddaughter in New Zealand. Used Sunbonnet Sue pattern from the book “Little Quilts’. Other appliqued shapes are my own design. All the colours of the quilt brought together in the Piano keys border.

This is a wall hanging I have done from a picture I took at my Mom’s cottage on the coast of Maine. I used a fusible raw edge applique technique. I enhanced the quilt with thread painting. This was a great creative project.

I’ve used the needle-turn applique method for the flowers and stitched them using silk thread. I love the thread simply because it sort of ‘melts’ in the fabric thus making the stitches almost invisible and gives a neat finish. Sashings were machine pieced and this quilt took 8 months to complete.

this is a quilt i made on the occasion of my daughter’s wedding…spring in the boreal forest brings small yellow sunflowers…they hide among the forest loving the filtered light…

This is an Amy Bradley Design that grandson Ryan loved, so I got the pattern and the fabrics to make it when Ryan could be here for a visit. That summer he put all the penguins together on the background. That was a few years ago. He goes off to college this summer. Teresa Farrar quilted it.

I love the southwest, and the Roadrunner is a critter that passes through my yard on a daily basis. Susan Cranshaw designed this pattern and I have made 3 of them so far. The roadrunner is made from very tiny pieces of over 50 fabrics to make the feathers, it is embellished with rock beads.

An endangered species, the primary-colored Scarlet Macaw mates for life, and can live up to 80 years. I try to bring attention to beautiful creatures that may become extinct. A world without these birds? Surely not our planet Earth

A landscape for each season, using just one color, was a personal challenge I gave myself last year. Spring Greens came pretty close to the rules, but I had to fudge a bit so I could add a very necessary sun!

There’s simply no hiding the fact that I’m a geek. I couldn’t resist combining two of my loves into one wall hanging. Since I had a rectangular space open on my wall I decided to lay the applique out in a line rather than a square. It was such a success that I’m working on my third one!
