Arabesque Arabesque
By: Sally Wright,
California, USA

In a class with Jenny Bowker at Asilomar we played with different methods of designing our own tiles and then combining them in quilts. In mine I took motifs from antique Turkish Iznik tiles and recreated them in batik fabrics for a table runner.

Autumn Glow Autumn Glow
By: Yvonne Bamlett,
Alberta, Canada

This runner starts with a Bears Paw block and is expanded with log cabins strips all arranged for the colors to cordinate. It is made all from scraps of different golds, greens, oranges, burgandies, rusts and black. To me – it really does “glow” and represents all the colorful hues of autumn.

This was my first tablerunner swap and was made using charm squares. On checking with my partner, I found one of her fave fabrics was Blueberry Crumb Cake – and that made my decision very easy 😉 I really enjoyed making this – after I got over the initial nerves of my first swap.

This is the backside of a runner for a dresser made for a friend who will be displaying rocks on it. The other side is appliqued and has a slightly darker background. The idea is that it will be reversible. It is made in two pieces so there can be some distance between each piece. Not bound yet.

The Giving Tree gets it’s name because aside from the background, it was made from pieces of cloth from friends. I really enjoyed the idea of recycling and minimizing waste. I think it’s a wonderful way of going green and planting a tree.

I live in Vermont and the fall season is so pretty here. My hubby takes us for rides just so I can take pictures of the mountains with all the different colors of the leaves. I love it and the rides gives us great family time as well.

I love watching the leaves turn the beautiful colours that they do, then I love watching them slowly fall off the trees and leave the trees bare, ready for spring.

I love the leaves, although those in other areas would wonder why. In Alberta, most of the trees turn only yellow, and the colour lasts for only a week or two before a big wind blows them all off the trees (usually by the end of September). But, I always appreciate them while they are there!

It was so hard to pick just four favorites this week. So many wonderful table runners.

My favorite part of the Fall/Autumn season is hard to pin down. I’m happy that the temperatures are starting to fall. The leaves are beginning to change color. The vegetable garden is full of bounty but is reaching the end as well. Everything is slowing down, but I like the changes. I suppose I do like that sitting with a quilt in my lap to finish the binding isn’t something I dread, so that is a definite upside.

I apologize for the long comment, but felt I needed to explain well to get the full message imparted.
My favorite part of the Autumn/fall season is the fun fact that I seem to immerse myself even more so than I already do, into arts and crafts that will provide my loved ones warmth and comfort in the cooling of the seasons. I live in the Midwest-which can change on a dime with the weather, temperature, and conditions. What better way to spend dreary days in the house, than in my craft room, dreaming and creating all the beautiful cherry, warm items that will contribute to making the house look invitingly warm. Whether it’s a new quilt, runner, mug rug, sweater, scarf, wraps, socks. It make me appreciate and have gratitude that I was blessed enough to pick up on so many forms of arts/crafts. I’m in my 40’s, and through a series of events, which transpired in a short period of time, I became very ill just a year ago, in and out of the hospital, where I ended up flatlining which lead to a pacemaker, and many other issues as well. That in itself made me realize, live is too short. Enjoy your time here with all the passion we have all that we can, because we never know when it will be over!

My favourite part of autumn is leaves. How they change the colours of the trees greens into a multitude of golds, bronzes and more; how they fall in gust of wind; how drifts of leaves litter the paths crunching underfoot. So much beauty and fun.
