A Quilter's Garden A Quilter’s Garden
By: Persimon Dreams,
Wisconsin, USA

Inspired by a ‘Tool Time’ Project QUILTING Challenge. The four ‘tools’ I used for my inspiration were…
Rotary Cutter (flowers)
Needle (stems of the flowers)
Scissors (leaves)
Stick Pins (rays coming from flowers). Simple linear quilting for grass and ‘flower rays’ make the perfect final touch

Original design-Brave little pansies bloom almost year round here on the coast. Raw edge applique; such a freeing technique, was placed over a pieced background. I exaggerated the value difference for emphasis and they really show up crisply, even from a distance. I love the flower pot fabric.

My favorite flower in my garden is my Hydrangias, especially the one my dear friend gave me when she was dying of cancer. I looked after her and another mutual friend gave her this Hydgranger for Easter. She enjoyed it for about 6 weeks and then asked me to plant in my garden. It flourishes every year since I planted it. She passed away holding my hand June 4,2010. I miss her so. But my Hydrangia brings a smile to my face as the beautiful blooms emerge.

I call it a snowball tree, not sure of the real name – there are white hydrangea type flowers. My grandmother passed away in the 1970’s and before the house was sold my mom took a cutting from her tree. After a few years when it became established and I moved into my house, my mom took a cutting and we planted it at my house. That was 15 years ago and now my grandmothers snowball tree is bigger than my house! I think of her when it blooms every early summer.

Can’t pick just one. First it’s Lilacs and Lily of the Valley in spring with their heady scents. Then the Peonies. During the heat of the summer it’s the zinnias with all their colours, and come fall it’s Mums and Sunflowers with their deep, rich Fall colours.

Since I live in the desert, our flowers are all cactus flowers. My favorite is the floral “hats” the Saguaro’s wear each spring. The Saguaro cactus takes hundreds of years to grow, and the blooms atop the cactus which form what appears to be a pill “hat” become pods that drop off to start new cactus. But most are eaten by animals, and the few that do take off, will take a hundred years just to get a few feet in height. The Saguaro are most prevalent in a “forest” that winds up from Tucson to just north of Phoenix in Arizona. I live at the very northern edge of the forest.

My favorite has to be my golden dew drops bushes, mostly because their beautiful dangling clusters of purple bring hummingbirds, bumblebees, and all kinds of butterflies, almost all year long!

My other favorite has to be my plumeria – I call it “stick plant” and we’ve raised it up from a little stick in the dirt, about 5 inches high. It’s about 5 years old now and the main trunk is about the size of my forearm, it has 3 branches at the top (which is about 7 feet high!!) and it smells heavenly when it’s in bloom.

That Stash Pack from Vicki is simply gorgeous & I’d love to add it to my fabric collection, to be used in a very special project!!
