Welcome everyone to our first star block lesson for the Delightful Stars Quilt-Along (DS QAL). Here is the finished Block 18:

For the first several blocks that we’ll be creating, the focus is on creating the various triangle and flying geese units. We’ll be paying close attention to lining up the seams and not cutting off the triangle points. A couple of tips shared in this week’s lesson are below.

When joining the half-square triangle units together, focus on lining up the diagonal lines. The photo on the left shows that the two triangle points achieved after sewing the seam don’t quite match. To fix this, I unstitched one inch from the edge of the seam, realigned the pieces as shown in the second photo, pinned, and stitched again, making sure to backstitch the starting line. The photo on the right is the result; it’s close enough for my liking.

When attaching the flying geese units to the pinwheel, I’m focussing on getting the flying geese point aligned with the centre seam in the pinwheel block.
