Hello quilting friends!

Have you ever made a Churn Dash quilt block? Perhaps in a sampler quilt? It’s an unassuming block that, as a quilting teacher, has great potential as a learning opportunity for quilters of all experience levels.

So, why am I singing the praises of the lovely Churn Dash quilt block today? Well, I’m celebrating the fabulous book by Lori Holt, Farm Girl Vintage.

The Churn Dash block is just one of the fabulous blocks featured in Lori’s new book. While the Churn Dash block is rather humble, it fits in perfectly with all of Lori’s other blocks. Below are some lovely pot holders made with the blocks in Lori’s book.

Along with Lori of Bee in my Bonnet, our wonderful friends at the Fat Quarter Shop are hosting a Sew Along.

As part of this Sew Along, I was asked to make one of the blocks from the book. I chose the, oh so humble, Churn Dash block. Lori’s book features blocks that finish at two different sizes, 6″ and 12″. I opted to make one of each size.

Here are the fabrics I’ve chosen to use for my Churn Dash blocks. The fabrics for my 12″ finished block are on the top. I just love that multi-coloured fabric shown in the middle. I used this fat quarter as my jumping off point to choose the other fabrics.

Here are my fabrics all cut out. If you’re following Lori’s book, you’ll note that I chose to create strip sets for the B/D units. Additionally, I used my favourite ruler to cut out the half-square triangle units.

Here are my two finished blocks. I was able to fussy cut the larger block, and centre the motif. The smaller block, was a bit more complicated, being so small, but I’m happy with how it turned out for my chosen fabrics.

Remember those pot holders I featured above? The video below is fantastic as it shows you how to use the backing of your quilt project, in this case the pot holders, as your binding. This is how I did my own first quilt binding. I really wish I had known the tips shown in the video at that time!
