Candace’s Double Nickel Quilt Challenge

Please join me in welcoming today’s guest blogger, Candace Moore as she shares her Double Nickel Quilt Challenge project with us. I’ve been following Candace’s blog, and just love seeing what she’s doing with charms. Great inspiration.

Hi, my name is Candace Moore and I have challenged myself to design 55 quilts using 5″ squares in my 55th year and blog about it.

Why you ask? Many factors entered in to this crazy idea. I turn 55 on December 9, 2011, I love to quilt, I would like to make a quilt for each family member, I have a lot of fabric and need to make room for new fabric, I have a lot of fabric scraps, ideas for quilts pop into my mind quite often, and I accomplish more when I have a goal. Since I am turning 55, I thought I would go with a “5” theme.

So, 55 quilts using 5 inch squares in my 55th year and The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge was born.

I learned to sew in 4H and with my grandma. My mom did not sew and neither did my sisters so this was my special time with my grandma. I remember telling her that patterns kept popping up in my head. She said, “Well, then you should do something about it.”

Forty some years later, this challenge is my way of doing something about it. Patterns for all of the quilts in the challenge will be for sale as instant downloads on a new website I am working on, www.doublenickelquilts.com. I tend to not construct quilts using traditional methods. I try to eliminate methods that cause problems for quilters like long borders, long rows, mitered corners and small pieces.

My patterns will reflect my methods and help quilters create easy, accurate quilts. The first quilt of my challenge, Bright Shiny Nickels, is posted on my blog as a FREE pattern.

As far as the challenge goes, I’m a little behind but I have made 10 quilts and that’s quite a few more than I would have made if I had not started this challenge. Follow my progress on my blog.
