Hi everyone, welcome to Block 12 of the Beginner’s Quilt-Along (QAL). Just one more block left after this one. Even if you’re planning to do the straight layout, not the on-point one, I suggest you make all 13 blocks, then decide which ones to keep in your quilt. The extra block can be used in your backing.
If you’re new here, you can find all the info and links on the Beginner’s QAL page. The tutorials will remain on this site indefinitely. I’ll also be putting together a PDF booklet that will be for sale toward the end of September. This booklet will include the block tutorials, beginner’s lessons & resources and recommended products.
Pat Sloan is quilting along with us too. She’s making three sets of blocks using her gorgeous Eat Your Fruits and Veggies fabrics. Check out Pat’s blue & yellow blocks on her blog. She’s doing the on-point layout.
Don’t forget to upload your completed block to the Flickr group each week for a chance to win prizes. Winners are chosen randomly from the completed blocks submitted by 2:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday. Check the Sponsors and Prizes page to see all the goodies.
Block 12 – Ride Bikes All Day
Pat called this week’s block Ride Bikes All Day. Many of you might recognize it as Jacob’s Ladder or (Rocky) Road to California. However, according to Jinny Beyer’s The Quilter’s Album of Patchwork Patterns, this block, with this colouring, was first called The Railroad and is attributed to the Ladies Art Company and first appeared in 1897. There are several slightly different variations of this block too. Here are some that I found on Flickr:
A note about block colours: I chose to represent this block in 3 colours; however, you could make it scrappy too.
Beginner’s Lesson and Block Tutorial
The beginner’s lessons and block tutorials for the Beginner’s Quilt-Along have been removed from this site and are now available for sale as a complete booklet.
Find out more about it here: Breezy Beginner’s Sampler Quilt.

I LOVE Triangulations! I already have an older version of it and I’m using it for a block exchange and for one of Bonnie Hunter’s quilts. I like Triangulations much better than Bonnie’s way of making HST’s. If I win, I’ll have a giveaway on my blog for it. Great product. Also, I’ve been wanting to make the Jacobs Ladder block for the past few months.
I just want to say how grateful I am for these block tutorials and putting them on PDF. I am a confident beginner so I sew at my own pace. These blocks mean alot to me and I want to say thank you to you.
I have seen Triangulations before but I had forgotten it. That is a most excellent prize. I can see using Foundation Paper with it since I bought it and never really paper piece
I have made my 5 square patch blocks. Even though I cut the sections 5 1/8 for good measure, I had to reseam 4/5 because they did not measure 4 1/2 when ironed. Sigh! It’s a learning curve! Tomorrow the half triangles using my June ruler :-)
This is great, I’m going to use up all those small leftover pieces and make mine scrappy. Thanks Michelle!
Is there a PDF for block 12? The previous ones have been very helpful and useful for the future.
Love the variety of the blocks and a quick quilt to make this summer.
Thankx

I just realized this block was up a short time ago. I always clicked the links above each block and never realized the block pictures were linked also. oops.
I would LOVE Triangulations. I’ve wanted that for the past two years after seeing a lot of information about it on a few different blogs. Awesome prize.
Back from camping so time to catch up. Another cool tool which looks like fun. No wonder quilters are such a happy bunch. Thanks Michele for all your lessons and good tips.
I love using the paper piecing techniques available today. It just makes everything so much easier. I have loved all of the blocks, and all of the information that you and Pat Sloan have provided each month.
