Stash Busting and Quiltathon

Judy’s just posted her latest FREE stash busting project. She’ll post the next steps every few days. Isn’t it gorgeous! I love it. The idea is to use up stash, so you can make room for more pretty fabrics.

Be sure to check out the no waste flying geese tutorial [PDF file]. I haven’t tried this method before, but will give it a whirl this afternoon.

The first step in Judy’s quilt uses 4 7/8″ squares, just shy of a 5″ charm, and I have lots of those already cut for myself. If this turns out well, it might be a good project for the charms I received from the Charms for Charity contest.

Going to go check out my stash of brights that I could use… not that I have time for another project, but this looks like fun!

Oh, and it’s Quiltathon weekend too. Be sure to post your progress on Judy’s site.

Spring Hats for Market

Check out the gorgeous hats I made for Judy and I to wear at Market. All they need is a little bit of ribbon added so they can be tied under our chin. I’m sure we’ll be a great hit.

Ok seriously, these are candy dishes, made from another of Geta Grama’s fabulous tutorials, Quilted Bowls.

I used Timtex and no batting as it was strong enough. Since I made mine all patchy (inspired by Easter colours), I cut rectangles large enough for the pattern pieces, quilted those, then cut out the shaped pieces exactly. This way when I cut them out, the stitching went right to the edge of each piece (and I didn’t sew my fingers!).

Free Flower Block of the Month

midnight_posies_quilt

Reeze Hanson has created this gorgeous free Flower BOM project, Midnight Posies.

This pattern is a great beginner project and is a wonderful “first quilt” for those who want a pretty throw quilt with simple piecing. The fusible machine-applique border is super simple and is a great project for learning a few new techniques.

The fabric requirements and the first two blocks have been posted already. The instructions are well done and include great tips.

Happy National Quilting Day 2009

home-nqa

The National Quilting Association is devoting this year to the Home. They have created a free project, Welcome Home, to honour National Quilting Day.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day filled with lots of quilting.

I will be celebrating in spirit this year. Instead of quilting I’ll be playing dolls, colouring or baking a cake (?) with my 3 year old niece, making funny faces at my 4 month old niece and celebrating my “baby sister’s” 30th birthday. Where did the years go, I have no idea. Happy Birthday (tomorrow) lil sis!

See last year’s NQA block.

Update from Lucy:

“You’re going to see Auntie Schell tomorrow.”
“Yay! I so excited to see my Auntie Schell.”
*pause*
“Auntie Schell is a good girl.”

Good to know I’m a good girl! haha

Woven Wonder – A Tutorial?

By: Kim Lapacek

I am going to try to break down for everyone the steps I took in making my woven wonder quilt. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures during the process and I have no near plans to recreate this amazing quilt. This has also been an ongoing project for the past four years so my memory is a bit hazy at parts. The best thing to remember is that you can adjust lengths and amounts to fit the size quilt you want to do…just takes a little extra math!

The Story BEHIND the MAGIC

I HATE matching my corners when piecing a quilt. I absolutely HATE it. So, one day I had this brilliant idea (or so I thought at the time)…I would WEAVE a quilt…that way, I didn’t have to worry about my corners matching. I should add here that I had this brilliant idea in the beginning of 2005.
