What is your quilting style?

I like to combine both piecing and appliqué better. I definitely like the freedom more of art quilts but I love how amazing a pieced quilt looks when you choose the perfect fabrics. I’m probably an ‘art quilter’.

How did you get started quilting and/or designing?

My grandma still tells the story of the ‘quilt’ I made my brother when I was 5 from my mom’s rag bin – including the old furry toilet seat cover. I was always creating things as I grew up and loved to sew. When I met my now-husband’s mom for the first time, looked around her house full of wonderful craftiness, and I thought to myself, “This woman is going to like me.” We started to go to her house every Tuesday for dinner and I would work on my first ‘real’ quilt AND get a delicious, home cooked meal! I have continued to work with Diane (my mother-in-law) since that time on different quilts and projects, including Project QUILTING. She has been a fantastic quilting mentor – I couldn’t have married into a better family!

Do you have a favourite quilt?

I’m digging my quilt ‘Owl Be Yours’ lately. It was really fun to make and it was definitely a quilt that ‘created itself’ as I worked on it.

Quick and fun questions:

  • Favourite colour: rainbow (as my 4 year old would say)
  • What part of the quilting process do you like the most? Stepping back and looking at my creation
  • What part of the quilting process do you dislike the most? BORDERS!
  • Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or: cookie dough!
  • Favourite super hero or comic book character: batman
  • Most exciting place you’ve travelled: Germany
  • Favourite quote or mantra: “She was the type of girl who made ordinary things extraordinary” ~ TheDreamyGiraffe

What is your quilting style?

My style? I have struggled with defining this for many years. I like Modern colors and simplicity, and I love traditional quilt concepts as well. I have settled on “Urban Folk — Modern Design, Timeless” style as a the Tagline for Blue Nickel Studios. I think everything I do fits under that banner pretty well. Here is my latest quilt behind Ty Pennington in this article.

How did you get started quilting and/or designing?

I made my first quilt in the late 1970′s. Americana was “big” then, and I was into anything that I thought was “antique” I made my own quilt based on a crazy quilt I had seen somewhere…my quilt had fabrics from the clothes and things that my mom had sewn for us. It also has silver lame from a dress of my grandma’s and leftover lime green fake fur from a grade school project. Fast forward to early 1990′s where I decided I would like to make some things for my new wife and our families, so I bought my own sewing machine. Somewhere along the way we stopped a quilt show, and it has just grown from there…in the last few years exponentially!!

Do you have a favourite quilt?

Hard to pick a favorite, but if I did have to pick one, it would be this one. the applique blocks were made for me by the first guild I was in. Some are from a book out of print by now I’m sure…and I can’t find it to give you the title. Some people made up to go with Cottage theme that I wanted. I designed it’s layout, and then a friend hand quilted it. I think the fact that so many friends helped make it, that it contains so much applique (which I Never have the patience for), and that it is hand-quilted (the only hand-quilted one I own) are the main reasons that make it my favorite.

Quick and fun questions:

  • Favourite colour: Red and everything else as well….
  • What part of the quilting process do you like the most? Watching a design go from paper to cloth and totally work AND I love finishing up the binding…I know I am almost done now!!
  • What part of the quilting process do you dislike the most? The actual quilting part.
  • Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or: Cake-Chocolate, Ice Cream-vanilla, Strawberries-Real over said ice cream….everything else…butterscotch
  • Favourite super hero or comic book character: Flash, cause he’s fast and humorous!
  • Most exciting place you’ve travelled: Disneyland, and I can’t wait to go again……. Oh, and Every Quilt Market I have ever been too…LOVE MARKET!!!
  • Favourite quote or mantra: “The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.” Walter Bagehot via Mary Engelbreit

Block 28 – Scott’s Christmas Candy

Here’s Scott’s Christmas Candy block. It’s a great block for using up scrappy strips. Head over to Scott’s blog to download the tutorial.

What are you thankful for? One thing I am thankful for is my Thanksgiving meal coming up, then of course the sweets that come after! In particular a Lollipop Shoppe has tickled my fancy lately. Thankfully, everything in this one has zero calories. Yep, this Lollipop Shoppe is an adorable quilt kit filled with taffy, lollipops and ice cream cones made with the Dessert Party collection by Ann Kelle. I can’t wait to indulge in it after my Thanksgiving meal!

That brings us to this week’s theme, Thanksgiving/Gratitude – let’s see your beautiful quilts. You will have a chance to win a Jelly Roll of Grand Finale by Sandy Gervais.
