Meet Quilter Vanessa Wilson (and a Give-Away too!)

Please join me in welcoming Vanessa Wilson as today’s guest blogger. She shares with us her very busy family and quilting life. She’s also giving away two patterns to two lucky winners that leave a comment here. See below for details.

Hi there! My name is Vanessa Wilson. I am the wife and mother behind Crafty Gemini, a blog dedicated to creativity on a budget! I post dozens of my FREE step-by-step text and video tutorials for beginning sewists and quilters. I also host giveaways, quilt alongs, and post product reviews of quilting devices, notions, etc.

vanessa

So, who am I and where do I come from? I am a 27-yr old, wife and stay-at-home mama by day and a college law professor by night. My family is from the Dominican Republic. I was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Miami, Florida. After graduating from high school I attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL (GO GATORS!) and received a BA in Anthropology. Since I couldn’t do much with that degree I decided to attend law school at UF as well. After one year in law school I was in desperate need of a creative outlet.

Having always cooked, baked, decorated cakes, thrown pottery, etc. I really needed to get back into some kind of artsy hobby. So, I called my mother and (once again) begged her to teach me how to sew. I was 22 years old and had literally been asking her since I was 8. She always refused because she thought I was going to sew my fingers! The trauma behind that is that when my mother came to the U.S. at age 14 she worked in a clothing factory in New York city. She was such a speedy seamstress that sometimes she would sew her finger. OUCH! After her experience she didn’t want us to make the same mistake. Understandable. I assured and reassured her that at 22 years of age I was pretty sure I could keep my fingers away from that needle! She agreed and brought over a 1966 Singer sewing machine and taught me how to thread it and sew straight stitches. That was the beginning of my new obsession.

The Edge Blog Hop with Pat Sloan and Friends

Welcome to everyone hopping around quilter’s blog land for Pat Sloan’s The Edge Blog Hop. Today is the last day of the hop and my special day.

the edge bloghop

What’s been your favourite part of the blog hop? The fabulous recipes? The measuring antics? The marshmallow fields? I know, a chance to win a 10 pack set of the new The Edge rulers from Sullivan’s?

Sulivans Rulers

While many of the bloggers have mentioned the special features of the new rulers and I did too last week, I want to show you a close-up of the lines on the square up rulers. This photo shows a portion of the 16.5″ square ruler:

Click the photo for a larger view!

I was a little skeptical at first of the large red lines, until I saw the ruler myself. They are perfect for squaring up blocks. They sit just on the outside of the line you are using to measure, not in the middle like other rulers. I can actually see what I’m doing, and not guess and hope it’s in the middle of something I can’t see properly. The diagonal black line is perfect too for squaring up oversized 1/2 square triangles or hour glass blocks. I love that the 1/4″ and 1/8″ markings are a different colour too and both appear on every 1″ cross hatch. The rectangular rulers also have 30, 45 and 90 degree lines on them.

Pat, you did a fabulous job with these lines. I know I’ll be ordering a few additional sizes and retiring some of my other rulers that are just too difficult to see.

Aggression Cookies

Let me introduce to you, my 4.5-year old niece Lucy. She loves to bake with her Momma. Lucy wants to share with you a family-favourite cookie recipe. Lucy loves to make this recipe as she can get her hands right into the cookie dough and mix it up really well. The photo was taken just before the real fun began.

Lucy baking

The more you mix the dough, the better the cookies taste. And, of course, you add coloured sugar at the end, and they are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Best served with a pot of tea or ice cold milk. (P.S. they freeze really well, and taste great just out of Nana’s freezer when she’s not looking.)

aggression-cookies

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 10-12 minutes
Serving size: 4+ dozen cookies

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups brown sugar, lightly packed
1 ½ cups margarine/butter
3 cups quick cook oatmeal
1 ½ cups white flour
½ tsp. baking soda

Instructions:
Pre-heat oven to 350ºF.
Mix margarine/butter with brown sugar until fluffy.
Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
Combine in one bowl.
Mash, knead, squeeze with hands – get your aggression out! – until well mixed.
Roll into small balls.
Gently press with fork and sprinkle with sugar (white or coloured).
Bake 10-12 minutes.

The fabric that I thought would never end!

The first quilt I ever made was a quillow given to my parents. It’s still around, though faded and with a few tears and stains now. Of course (ha!), after one class and one completed project I was ready to tackle a full-sized bed quilt for myself. I had no idea how much fabric I would need, and can’t even remember how much I bought, but I’m happy to report it is now, finally, all gone. The last fat quarter I included in a swap package… my apologies to my swap partner that received it.

Here’s the bed quilt I made. Sorry for the horrible photo, I really should take a better picture.

mishka-bed-quilt.jpg

During the class for the quillow, we were given the option of what the front block would look like. I chose an easier block for that project, but then decided to jump right in and make 8 of these place mats for accent pieces. I still have the template plastic from this project. One of these days I should try this block again, and this time not cut off most of the points!

mishka-8-pointed-star.jpg

No picture available, but I did make drapes to match out of the flowered fabric too, with a ruffle in the pink. What can I say, that was the style back then .. or was it just me?? With still fabric left, I made this, I really have no idea what it was to represent, but I’m sure I saw something similar in a decorating magazine. I don’t buy those anymore. ;)

mishka-squared.jpg

It’s now serves as a pillow for my hard-working quilt inspector, Daniel.

quality-control-inspector

The leftover bedroom fabric then sat on my shelves for several years, until I made this quilt for Victoria Quilts Canada. It’s called Flowers in the Wind, and really, the only reason it has that name, was so that I could justify using the final yardage of that flowered fabric and matching solids.

Flowers in the Wind

I did learn a great lesson in estimating yardage from this experience!

Win a 10 piece set of The Edge Rulers

My youngest niece Alice (turning two at the end of this month) is ready to go blog hopping. She has no idea what a quilting ruler is, but if she can run, jump, hop or skip, she’s ready. I swear this little one hasn’t stopped running full steam ahead since she was 10 months old.

Alice

One lucky winner will receive all 10 of the Sulivan Edge Rulers. All you have to do to enter, is leave a comment here and on each of the blogs participating in the hop. Hurry, you only have until Sunday at midnight to enter.

Leave a comment below telling me which of the fabulous recipes that have been shared in this hop you’ll be trying first. It’s OK if you choose my cookies, they really are delicious! ;)

Wait! There’s even more FUN!!

I’m participating in Debi’s Fall into Fall Quilters Blog Give-Away. I’m giving away a fat quarter bundle of hand-dyed fabrics and a copy of the latest issue of The Quilt Life magazine. Click here to enter the give-away.

Do you love swaps? I’m hosting a Candle Mat Swap. It’s super cute and easy to make. One charm pack will make two candle mats, plus you’ll need a fat quarter for the backing (two FQs if you are making two) and a scrap (or two) of batting. Registration closes October 5th.

Want to see the cutest Teddy Bear Quilts ever? Check out this week’s virtual quilt contest and vote for your favourite Teddy Bear Quilt.
