Updated: No more snowflakes required. Please read this post for more info.

Hi Everyone,

I have some information on various efforts going on to help support the families and students so greatly impacted by the massacre in Newton, CT. I’m just sharing info, so if you have questions please contact the respective person and/or refer to the links provided.

First, here’s a great activity you can do with your kids or grandchildren over the holidays, make snowflakes. The Sandy Hook PTA wants to welcome the children back to their new school to a Winter Wonderland of snowflakes. More info here. There’s a Facebook group set up too.

Second, a local quilt shop is collecting pillow cases, 600 of them, to be donated to the children. See this Facebook group for full details.

I’ve also received two emails about quilts initiatives, I’ve copied and pasted them below.

Hi,

I am the Long Island chapter coordinator for Quilts for Kids.

We have been distributing quilts to those who have suffered from Hurricane Sandy. We work directly with schools, churches, community centers, hospitals, doctor’s offices and others to reach as many as we can.We reach out to all of Long Island in addition to Brooklyn and Queens.

Today we were in Breezy Point (where all the homes burned) distributing quilts at their tree lighting ceremony. We will be receiving and distributing quilts for a very long time.

Additionally my sister lives in Newton CT and we will also be taking quilts there for the children and families who have been traumatized by the horrific massacre that took place on Friday.

If anyone is interested in donating quilts they can be shipped to the address below. Please include name, address, email etc so that we may send and acknowledgement of thanks.

Hello Michele,

I am writing to ask for your help for a new quilt project I have just started.

I am making a remembrance star quilt, in memory of the victims of the Newtown massacre. A star for each victim.
I will be raffling off the quilt to raise money for a reputable nonprofit here in the States– a coalition of 48 different organizations— called The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence. Every donation of $25 or more will garner an entry into the giveaway.

Will you help me spread the word?

Warmly,

If you know of any other initiatives, please include them in the comments below.

Thanks!!

    Hi Michele!

I am also collecting quilts, but the quilts donated will be going to the first responders, police, firemen, etc., of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Being an EMT myself, I am saddened by what these men and women are going through now, and will be dealing with for the rest of their lives! I am in the process of gathering the 200+ names of the men and women who played a part that day, so their name can be embroidered or appliqued onto their personal quilt.

I’ve already donated quilts to people who lost their home to the wildfires in the Western United States this past summer, and helped bring quilts to 325 families who lost their home to Hurricane Sandy. Because there are so many things being donated to the children (as there should be!!!), I decided to focus on those who risked their lives running into the school that day, not knowing what awaited them. They are truly heroes!!!

Thank you for your help in spreading the word about what we’re doing!

    Hugs!
