It’s voting time for this week’s Quilts for the Little Ones contest. There are many gorgeous quilts for you to look at. You can vote for FIVE favourites this weekend.

Our friends at the Fat Quarter Shop have donated a jelly roll of Lucy’s Crab Shack by Sweetwater for first place and a Little P Pattern for the second place winner.



If you’ve entered a quilt in the contest, be sure to read the updated rules and guidelines page on inviting others to vote for your quilt.

Now it’s time for you to vote for your favourites!

  • Voting is open Friday – Monday, October 8th at 8 a.m. (EDT)
  • One vote per person (based on IP address NOT email address), so have your family and friends cast a ballot for their favourite quilt
  • Winner announced Monday afternoon/evening

This quilt, together with many other, will be given to small kids that have lost their home and their loved ones in the earthquake that destroyed some cities in Italy in may 2012. We chose blue scrappy pinwheels that made us smile hoping they will do the same for a small boy.

I made this for my 5 yr. old grandniece, Anabelle & that is what the “A” says on the block. Unbeknownst to me, there is a book, “A” is for Annabelle: A Doll’s Alphabet by Tasha Tudor for which the quilt blocks were taken from. It is her favorite book, which makes this so special to her and to me.

I used a jelly roll of Lily & Will by Bunny Hill Designs to make this block style baby quilt which went into a charity auction. The backing is a brown flannel and the binding is scrappy from leftovers. I quilted it using a straight line grid.

I made this quilt for my friend’s sixth baby. I have six children, as well, and she is very special to me. One of the blue fabrics has tiny anchors and sailors in honor of the daddy who serves in the navy. The quilt design is my own. I pieced the back with extra pinwheel blocks from the front.

This was a commission for a baby’s quilt, commissioned whilst mum was still pregnant (and not yet aware of the sex of the baby). I love the owls, the colours, it was such a lovely quilt to work on. The baby was born just before the quilt was finished and mum had her name added to the bottom.

I needed to make three baby quilts, two of them for twin boys. I had a set of 24 sampler star blocks I had made earlier in the year, in Moda Marblemates Dots fabrics. I used eight stars in each quilt, and came up with the Chinese coins and columns stettings, using scraps left over from the stars.

Maile was born in the “Year of the Golden Pig”‘ the most auspicious year in the zodiac. This quilt has the Japanese alphabet and the 12 animals of the oriental zodiac. The years are quilted into each block and the reverse side has tenugui of each animal. Hand pieced and appliqued and hand quilted.

Next Week’s Quilt Contest

The theme for next week’s quilt contest is Paper/Foundation Piecing. You can submit quilts, wall hangings, table runners, pillows etc. as long as the item you enter was created using paper/foundation piecing techniques and is completely finished (i.e. bound and quilted).

To enter the weekly contest, read the rules and guidelines, then submit your photo by next Friday, October 12, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. (EDT). Voting will start shortly thereafter and last until the following Monday, October 15, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. (EDT).

  1. It was really hard to choose just one from this collection. So many of them stood out because of the personal connection to a child in the life of the maker … the love and thought and care stood out.

    I agree with Nellie. It was SO hard to choose only 5. I loved so many!! A friend asked me, not too long ago, if I could make a couple quilts for her friend. These gave me some good ideas. Thank you everyone!
