Weekly Quilt Contest: Leaves, Trees & Flowers

Last week’s contest resulted in some unpleasantness, leaving me with no choice but to make some changes to the rules & guidelines for the weekly contests. Please see the highlights below and the updated Guidelines page before entering your quilt in the competition. These rules are effective immediately.

weekly quilt contest

The theme for this week’s quilt contest is Leaves, Trees & Flowers. The theme can be represented by the quilt design or in the fabrics chosen for your quilt. You can submit quilts, wall hangings, pillows, etc. using any technique (pieced, appliqué, embroidery) as long as the item you enter is completely finished (i.e. bound and quilted). Please do not submit a quilt that you’ve already entered in another contest this year… let’s see something different.

Vicki Welsh is back as this week’s sponsor and she’s donated three wonderful prizes.

Hi Everyone!

Has it really been only a month since I was last here? Autumn is right around the corner here in Virginia. While I love all seasons and all weather, I do especially love autumn in the Mid-Atlantic. The colors along the Blue Ridge Parkway are breathtaking and you can find inspiration for dozens of quilts.

I love this week’s theme because we all get so much inspiration from nature. Here are just a few of the fabrics in my shop that were inspired by leaves, trees and flowers.

Coleus is inspired by my one of my Grandmother’s favorite plants. I loved all of the different varieties that she planted in her garden.

sugar maple

Sugar Maple was inspired by a spectacular tree in my own front yard. I am grateful to the original owners for planting it.

morning glory

Morning Glory was inspired by the pretty little flower that invades our vegetable garden every September. The Morning Glory leaves are also wonderful for sun printing.

autumn fabrics

I think that the inspiration for the Autumn Stash Pack is obvious!

You can find me in all these places on the web:

Let’s get to the prize!

Vicki Welsh Quilt Story fabrics

This week I am awarding prizes to THREE winners. Each of the top three entries will receive their choice of a Stash Pack from my shop. The Stash Pack is a set of 10 fat eighths of fabric. If you wonder what you can do with fat eights, check out the zig zag quilt that my friend and quilt artist, Wanda Hansen is making with her Stash Packs.

Some Changes to the Rules…

As I mentioned above, there was some unpleasantness that resulted from last week’s contest. I have updated the rules and guidelines page and strongly encourage you to read it before entering.

Essentially, it is unacceptable to enter two quilts in the same weekly contest. The quilter that did so last week, chose to use a different name, location and email address allowing her to enter twice. I had no idea it was the same person, until it was pointed out to me along with some help from Google to translate the Russian.

Over the 2.5+ years I’ve hosted these weekly contests, there have been a few occasions of voter fraud. Some I’ve been able to prove concretely and they were dealt with appropriately. A few other occasions I wasn’t able to prove the fraud but strongly suspected it. As such, If I do suspect fraud in the future, I will opt to award the prize(s) to the quilter of my choice.

Additionally, since most fraudulent votes also seem to go hand-in-hand with quilters that post on web-based forums or send out mass mailings, these are now unacceptable methods to use when inviting your friends/family to vote for your quilt. It is also unacceptable to use proxy servers in order to vote multiple times for your quilt.

As you can imagine, I was very discouraged and disappointed yesterday morning when I found this out. My intent with these weekly contests is to provide an opportunity for quilters around the world to show off their quilts and for site visitors to enjoy the virtual quilt show and be inspired by the wonderful creations. If you enter one of my contests, I hope you share that same spirit.

It should go without saying, but if you are caught cheating, you are not welcome to enter future competitions. Please share your quilts elsewhere.

I am sad to hear about the incident – I personally think that it is an amazing contest that displays so much god-given talent throughout the world – I entered a quilt some time back and it was such an inspiration to start the next one – you are doing a great job with so much dedication and trouble – well done (a person seems to find fraudulent persons all over the show) – poor sad humans.

I was sad to hear about the incident too. I enjoy seeing what other people have made and have entered a few quilts in the past. Thank you for what you do Michele.

  3. Linda says:

Michele, I always enjoy seeing all the different quilts, and getting to vote on the ones I like best. Thank you for making this possible. I know it’s a lot of work. I’m sorry there are people who do not play fairly. Thank you again.

  4. Michelle Carr says:

Katie did a great job! I hardly imagine I could do anything close to this.. I’d better write a poem)

I love viewing and entering the weekly contest. I have discovered some great blogs and friends because of it. Thank you for all you do to encourage us as quilters and bloggers too. I applaud your stand and support your decisions for fairness and variety. Great job.

  6. I a few months ago entered one of your contests and got a few votes and then all of a sudden some one got 1000+ votes in a hour period of time and no one else did. You can tell that their has been some cheating in the past. Today’s contest I again entered and I truly hope that it is fair as I do not feel that the last one was fair. In the world today its too easy to have cheaters win and its a discredit to those that try hard. Thank you for watching this. If you have access to the IP address of those that vote it would be easy to remove those that all come from the same domain. Any way here is for a 2nd try before I give up on this.
