The theme for this week’s contest is Memory Quilts. These can be made with photos, used clothing or even quilts just made in memory of someone. You can submit quilts, wall hangings, pillows, etc. as long as the item you enter is completely finished (i.e. bound and quilted).
Valerie from Pastimes Online is back as this week’s sponsor. She’s donated two lovely magazines for this week’s winner.
Pastimes Online – Boutique for Quilters
Hi Everyone, thanks for having me back again for this week’s contest on Memory Quilts theme. I’m Valerie from Pastimes Online a boutique for Quilters – we specialize in Block of the Month clubs and projects. We include everything you need in your projects like cottons, silks, floss for stitching, thread for piecing, needles for sewing and stitching, pen for tracing, interfacing to back your stitcheries, and more….
I haven’t completed a Memory Quilt in the sense of printing pictures onto fabrics and including them into the patchwork of the quilt. But I do always try to create a great label with my memory of the quilt on it whether it be what I was going through personally in my life while I was working on the quilt or the fabrics I’ve chosen. Sometimes the design itself is special and specific for someone – in turn gives me a memory of that person while working on it. I try to make the quilt project itself the Memory part or the connecting part of the quilt, patchwork and embroidery.
This first one was made for a Cancer Camp here in Alberta and made out of my old jeans along with flannel to make it soft and cozy, I also have a couple of the pockets from the jeans on the back so the kid who gets this quilt can keep memories from camp in there.
Here’s a quilt I made for my nephew almost 10 years ago now…it’s made out of an old sheet set of my sister’s that she wanted me to use for his quilt. It’s one of the first quilts I made with all needle turn appliqué for the name and shapes. Unfortunately, she lent it to one of her friends who didn’t have much for her little one and it was never returned ;( but I know my sister loved it just the same.
Here’s the matching pillows and his label – made in 2002 – WOW time does go by so quickly. As you can see I reversed the sheet fabric for the pillows to make them more muted – boy was it hard to stitch through the sheeting by hand when I put the binding on – I haven’t forgotten that experience :)
Here’s another memory quilt – this was one of my first large quilts. Consisting of my old curtains (plain blue) and a mixture of scraps from all quilts I created before this quilt. So I made a label with a bit of a legend. What do you think? The label doesn’t have a swatch from ALL of the fabrics I used but quite a few of them.
As the sponsor this week, I wasn’t sure what to put together… so, how about the newest copies of Quilters Connection Magazine AND Vignette in Stitches Magazine.
As always, I look forward to your comments and sending out the prize to the winner of this week’s contest – how fun! I do have a quarterly NewsLetter, The Times if you’re interested in signing up.
Until next time, stay happy and creative,
