Beginner’s Quilt-Along, Fabric Requirements and Reliable Iron Give-Away
Hi everyone, it’s Michele here today. I’m very excited to be hosting a Beginner’s Quilt-Along over the next couple of months as part of the Learning Center with Pat Sloan. Pat will be sharing a Quilt Market wrap up post with us next week and the Learning Center regular posts will continue in September with appliqué next on the agenda.
For the quilt-along, we’ll be making 12 or 13 – 12″ finished blocks. You’ll have two options for putting your quilt together: either a standard layout with 4 rows and 3 blocks per row or an on-point layout that Pat will be teaching us how to do. The on-point layout uses 13 blocks while the standard layout uses 12, though you could use the 13th block in the piecing of your quilt’s backing. Both quilts will have sashing (and an option for cornerstones), a small 1″ border and a large 6″ border.
Below, I’m sharing the fabric requirements for the quilt-along, the fabrics I’ve chosen and we have a fantastic iron to give-away too. Check the Beginner’s Quilt-Along page for more information.
Fabric Requirements
All measurements used in the quilt-along will be Imperial (inches and yards). Here’s a quick tip to easily convert the measurements to Metric: go to Google and in the search box type something like, “1 yard in metres” and Google will do the conversion for you. Works with many measurement units.
Standard Layout

This quilt contains 12 blocks, sashing, cornerstones, inner and large outer border and finishes at 54″ x 67″.
You’ll need:
- 8 to 10 fat quarters for the quilt blocks, or if you prefer a consistent background fabric, 1 yard background and 6 fat quarters
- 1/2 yard sashing and (3″ strip for cornerstones, if different)
- 1.5 yards for 6″ border
- 3/8 yard for inner border
- 3/8 yard for binding cut at 2.5″
- 3.5 yards backing fabric
On-Point Layout

This quilt contains 13 blocks, sashing, cornerstones (optional), inner and large outer border and finishes at 56.5″ 69″ square.
You’ll need:
Update June 7, 2012: Please note updated yardage requirements for the on-point layout. My apologies folks for the error.
- 8 to 10 fat quarters for the quilt blocks, or if you prefer a consistent background fabric, 1 yard background and 6 fat quarters
11.5 yards setting triangles1/25/8 yard sashing1.52 yards for 6″ border3/81/2 yard for inner border1/25/8 yard for binding cut at 2.5″33.5 yards backing fabric
Update June 12, 2012: You may use 5″ charm packs for the first 12 blocks; however, charms aren’t big enough for Block 13. I would suggest having a consistent background fabric with them otherwise the designs created by the blocks will be lost. You’ll need 2 charm packs of 40 charms, plus 1 yard of background fabric having good contrast with the charm squares.
My Quilt-Along Fabrics
I’ll be doing the standard layout for my quilt and below are the fat quarters I’ve chosen. You’ll see that I’ve not chosen a consistent background colour to be used in my blocks. I’m going for a more subtle, harmonious look… a break from my usual quilting style. I’ll be using two of the flower prints from Coquette by Chez Moi for Moda that I showed last week and the colourful cream swirl prints.

My large border is this one:

My backing is the fabric on the left, sashing is yellow, inner border, binding and cornerstones will be in the turquoise:

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. The first block will be available next Thursday, June 7, 2012.
Quilt-Along Links
Reliable Iron Give-Away
The folks at Reliable Corporation have donated a Digital Velocity V100 iron to one lucky blog reader that helps us spread the word about the quilt-along to others. I covet this iron and only wish I could enter to win it. See it’s features in the video below:
How do you win the iron? You have five options to help spread the word, but please only one entry per person. If you do all four, just leave one comment. Here’s what you can do:
- Write a blog post about the quilt-along, use one of the images below and be sure to include a working link back to the Beginner’s Quilt-Along page. Share your fabrics if you’ll be joining the quilt-along too.
- Share the logo below and/or your fabrics if you’ll be quilting with us with your Flickr friends. Don’t forget to include the link to the quilt-along page indicated above.
- Share the quilt-along with friends on Twitter (make sure to tag me so I see it – @MishkaOttawa).
- Share the quilt-along with your friends on Facebook (make sure to tag me so I see it Michele Foster).
- If you’re a member of an online quilting/sewing forum or group, share about the quilt-along in your group, then post a link below to the message you posted there.
Leave just ONE comment below telling which of the above you did and include links if you shared on your blog, Flickr or in a quilting group/forum that you belong to. One winner will be randomly selected June 14th, 2012.
P.S. You don’t have to participate in the quilt-along to enter this give-away, just help spread the news about it.
Winner!
Congratulations to #78 Sherry for winning the iron. I’ve sent you an email. Thanks to everyone who shared about the quilt-along!

Hi I shared this on Facebook. Thanks for the give opportunity to win this fab. iron.
Hi,
I shared on Facebook, but wasn’t able to add you to the FB link. Thank you for starting the beginner’s quilt-along
I have a charm pack of Salt Air. Would that work for the colored/prints parts of each block? Would one charm pack be enough? Thanks!
Yes, you could use 5″ charm packs if you wanted to for the first 12 blocks. Charms won’t work for Block 13. I’d suggest having a consistent background fabric with them otherwise the designs created by the blocks will be lost. You’ll need 2 charm packs of 40 charms, plus 1 yard of background.

I believe I retweeted the post, and I was going to share on Facebook, I tried to tag you – hope it worked!! Thanks so much for doing this — My iron died yesterday!!
I added the logo and link! This is the first time I’ve been able to do that. The instruction link you gave was very helpful. I’m swamped with trying to finish up some family quilts but am hopeful to do the Quilt Along. Haven’t pulled any fabric yet but am thinking of doing it in Christmas fabric and will have one Christmas gift finished early!
I have shared on Facebook. I am going to use my “doggie” blocks in it. Have been wondering how to use themThanks
I shared on Facebook, but couldn’t tag you. I did request you to be a friend. It would be so cool to win this iron, as mine has suddenly begun to leak. :(
I put it on the side bar of my blog and it links back to your page. This is a great idea doing a beginner quilt along. I have so many projects going, I won’t have time to participate but look forward to seeing the project as it moves along.
I tweeted and forgot to leave a comment ):
I blogged about the quilt along on my blog and put the button on the side bar. I haven’t participated, yet, but plan to do so. It wouldn’t take much for me to catch up.
