Flying Geese Quilts

I wanted to make my parents a bright and fun batik quilt for their 50th wedding anniversary. I loved this pattern with all the flying geese and was able to make most of the top from my stash. Choosing the borders was the hardest part, I auditioned many fabrics before choosing these.

This is a paper-pieced quilt with Wild Geese blocks that measure approximately 6 inches square. I love to paper piece and love Batiks, so this was a fun quilt to make.

This tabletopper is “Cold Nose, But Warm Heart” from This and That patterns by Sherri K. Falls. You can also make it as a tree skirt. The blue fabrics have silver metallic in them, which makes it look like it was quilted with metallic thread. The snowmen are appliqued.

The pattern was from Quiltmaker magazine. I was drawn to it as it is scrappy – my favourite kind of quilt. I was able to use lots of 2 inch squares and 2 inch and 1 1/2 inch strips from my leftover boxes.

The quilt is made from the pattern by Janet Locey of Henscratch Quilting in flannels (a favorite). It allowed me to try a new tool (Eleanor Burns FG Ruler) and a new technique (hand basting as taught by Sharon Schamber). It was free motion quilted with clamshells on my (old) DSM.

This quilt was finished this morning, its an old UFO and its going to be hung on my bedroom wall. I’m new to quilting feathers and it was a pleasure to quilt so many of them. I quilted it on my Bernina 440 and at 50 x 50 its at the limit for me of how big I feel comfortable to quilt.

Geese in the Forrest was designed by Anina of Twiddletails blog and I completed this quilt during her quilt along on her blog. There are 427 flying geese in this quilt. I stitched in the ditch with variegated tread around each and every one of them!

I designed and made this quilt as part of a blog challenge for a charity. It was a good chance to perfect those Flying Geese and contribute to a wonderful cause.

When I made the quilt top, every quilt seemed to have blue in it. When I realized that the floral fabric had no blue, I decided there would be no blue geese in my quilt. About a year later, I rented time on a long arm machine. These are my first feathers.

This is one I have done twice. Once in Black and White and this one done in Browns and Tans.

This quilt has over 100 flying geese pieces in it and recently won a 2nd place ribbon at my local fair. It took me months to complete. I started it as a beginner and quickly found it to be too challenging for me. I finished it after I became more confident in my quilting skills.

This lap quilt is made primarily from 6″ charm squares that I have collected after years of trading with my internet friends. It’s not sexy, but it will be cozy this winter.
