What is your quilting style?

I love all styles of quilting but I tend to gravitate towards and design quilts with a bright, modern style but yet have traditional elements. The 8 patterns I just released definitely have a more modern look but still have classic elements.

the twist

How did you get started quilting and/or designing?

I’ve been sewing and quilting for over 10 years. The first project I ever made was with my Mom, it was a small messenger bag with a beaded fringe on the bottom. My seams were not all straight and a few of the corners didn’t tuck in perfectly but I LOVED it! For me, sewing and quilting is such a great creative experience and with it comes a wonderful sense of accomplishment when you see your finished project!

Do you have a favourite quilt?

I have a few that are my favorites but if I have to pick one, I would have to say it is a quilt made by my great-grandmother. The quilt is made up of lots & lots of 5" squares (cut with a scissors) and then sewn into rows. She made it for me when she was over 80 years old and after she had lost most of her eyesight, so I know it was not a quick or easy project for her.

Several years ago I was living in Minneapolis, it was the night before Christmas eve and I had just received the quilt from my great-grandmother. I packed the quilt in the trunk of my car, along with the gifts I was taking to my Mom’s for the holidays. I was trying to be ready to hit the road bright & early the next morning. Well, I woke up that next morning to find that my car had been STOLEN! Stolen with all the gifts for my family and the quilt in the trunk. The gifts I weren’t as concerned about as the quilt! I was so sad, thinking it was gone forever. Luckily, I got a call a couple of days later from the police who had found my car. Most of the gifts were gone but the quilt was still in the trunk! I was so happy and relieved to have it back!

Quick and fun questions:

  • Favourite colour: Right now it’s aqua
  • What part of the quilting process do you like the most? I love laying completed blocks out into rows!
  • What part of the quilting process do you dislike the most? I’ve got say – the binding
  • Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or: Chocolate
  • Favourite super hero or comic book character: Wonder Woman
  • Most exciting place you’ve travelled: New York
  • Favourite quote or mantra: My Mom used to love to say "Just happy to be here!"
