Beach Babes Beach Babes
By: Jessica Hoenig, New Jersey, USA

This was one of my first quilts, made for one of my best friends! She loves the beach, so it was only fitting. I didn’t know what Dresdens were yet, but I included a beach chair, beach ball, clouds, birds, and itsy bitsy flip flops. :)

This piece is my hand painted background, the “rocks” were needlefelted and burned, and the sea foam is a 3D element made with twisted ribbon and the whole piece is quilted.

It was my first attempt at hand-painting, and I hope you like it!

Flip Flops Flip Flops
By: Barbara, Oregon, USA

Raw-edged applique with grosgrain ribbon and button embellishments on the thongs. I used a yellow batik for the background fabric, which looks like beach sand . I free motion quilted wavy lines in the background, like sand dunes. There are waves in the blue border, like waves crashing on a beach.

Stripes Ahoy! Stripes Ahoy!
By: Andi Rudebusch, South Dakota, USA

My guild had a challenge to somehow use stripes in a quilt. I started thinking of all the things at the seashore that are striped – towels, chairs, umbrellas, even the boardwalk – and challenged myself further to use ALL stripes. I even found striped buttons for embellishments!

Sun, surf and sand Sun, surf and sand
By: Lindy, Washington, USA

Technically an art quilt, “Sun, surf and sand” is slash work (very like chenille). I used batiks, hand dyes, sand paper and sand dollars. The ‘quilt’ is the layers and layers of fabric, sewn in a sun shape. It is then mounted on a fabric covered art board.

Teddy Bears on Holiday Teddy Bears on Holiday
By: CathyW, United Kingdom

… my Teddy Bears have picnics … and suitcases … and footsteps in the sand … (I’m not sure if they ever go swimming…)
The original picture fabric had yukky gingham print between the pictures – they definitely needed re-framing to show how cute they are!

Re: Sharon Scott’s Sea Diamonds- I know that technically, Sharon, you did an incredible job of creating and blending the beach meets the sea scene, but did you know you also made a ‘secret’ scene as well? I instantly saw an under water mermaid swimming. She is there, trust me! Fantastic!
