Lenna from the Stitching Cow has written a couple of really great posts on Hand Quilting.
After reading her many tips, even I feel confident to try hand quilting again. I’d love to hear some advice on the most preferred batting to use for hand quilting. I remember years ago trying to use the Warm & Natural batting I bought by the yard from Joanne’s, with horrible results and lots of pain. It was just too hard to quilt through. I can’t remember now who it was but someone told me that particular batting is for machine-use only.
What batting do you use for hand quilting?

I only handquilt, and I prefer Quilters Dream 100% cotton in the Request weight which is the very thinnest they sell. Needles beautifully, seldom beards, and drapes very nicely. In addition, there is no creeping. I recently bought an assorted case, so that in itself is a recommendation – lol.

Handquilting without pain?? Never experienced that but will give this a try. Maybe I have been using the wrong batting. I know the cotton batting doesn’t work well for me when handquilting but does beautiful on machine quilting.

One other thing about handquilting I forgot to mention – needles – I use a 9 or 10 between and have noticed a big difference from brand to brand in the thickness of the same sized needle – experiment – the very thinnest you can find is the most comfortable to use.

I use a Fabricland brand called Low-loft poly (for summer quilts) as well as Micro-soft poly (slightly thicker and warmer for winter quilts) for hand quilting. Only once did I use a cotton brand and ripped out all the quilting before I got too far into the quilt.
